Thanks Duke, it was straight out of the space age. Here is another picture from the side, not the best composition I'm afraid. Unfortunately a German collector bought the camera before I could come up with payment.

Wow, a formidable-looking piece of equipment!  Yes, straight out of Flash Gordon.  How did you acquire this?
