As far as I can tell, it's the W1's poor quality in low light sensor. Something that Marshall always denied. But when I asked Marshall about taking images indoors with a flash, he had never done that!
When I use too much noise filter, you seem to think it's over the top. When I don't, you remark on the poor quality. Because of the resulting noise (not necessarily pix-elation), I generally treat it with a noise filter and like in this case, I used the blur tool on the faces (only). I also painted over a good deal of the background in an effort to improve that area of view. What I suggest is rather than me posting a smaller photo, you simply view it at a smaller dimension. I generally view the image to fit my screen and at that reduced size it views rather well I think.
