Thanks, Wojtek. I know there are several types of trees around there, including pine, cedar, hemlock and yew (probably spruce and/or others, too) - but I don't know one needle from another :- ) The mushroom is growing against a rhododendron bush.
You sound like you might know mushrooms, so I walked over and took a couple of 2D flash shots that might aid ID. The ones in "Example1" are about 14 cm in diameter. Now I'm curious to know what they are.

Cool shot. Hard to say what it is from this view point. Was it light brown?
The tree is not a pine and there are rather spruce-look alike needles.
