Thanks for the response JM.  I wrote a tutorial for using the clone tool to convert 2d to 3d shortly after the clone tool in SPM became available.  It's been uploaded to our "group files" for access.

As you know there are a variety of ways to do conversions and I believe the "artist" should use their own preference.  Of course the clone tool in SPM was added for the ability to fix smaller problem areas such as mis-sync and differences in light reflection from objects between the L & R chips.  I knew however as soon as I tried the clone tool, that the capability was there to convert entire images.  It was not designed well for that purpose however and although I've tried, I can't seem to get the designer(s) to implement more friendly conversion abilities in SPM even though there are now many people using SPM for converting images as evidenced in Flickr.com and other sites.

One thing I may have neglected to add to the tutorial is that (as in this case), when the resolution of the original image is small, you can increase the resolution via Photoshop before converting it.  I converted the image to a "smart object" within PS just to try and preserve quality when enlarging.  Enlarging resolution of an original small resolution image will allow you to clone in more detail.

Using the clone tool is similar to a combination of sculpting and painting.  Images of different complexity may yield different desired results.  In some cases, I may "touch up" areas using a paint program (something they could add into SPM to make it more complete).  Generally I've been using Photoshop for this when needed.

If interested, here are some of my conversions I've put in a SET on Flickr.com (my first attempts to more recent experienced examples)...

Very well done Brian, Humour is fine too in 3D, but I do not imagine the clone tool of SPM permit conversion and so quickly !
I will mount it in MPO for some French friend having humour.
Just notice to keep the yellow paper back giving less contrast to B&W draw lines will permit less ghosting on bigger B&W parallax contrast.

For my first old comic's book participation to re-mount in good anaglyph for OFFSET print  (French and German editor printed 60.000) for an artist conversion bellow, I add a Gray back ground to avoid any ghosting... success !

JM

The first anaglyph mount of the artist conversion was two colors print red/green  (Pantone colors = bad result for anaglyph) with many ghosting, it is because editor come to me (also for glasses).

I done also (before to get myself knowledge after many tests for 4 colors OFFSET print without ghosting) my fist anaglyph print bellow (house builder) in red/green two colors, but I add in printer red and green inks some mixing of yellow and orange fluorescent inks... result was no ghosting. Too old technique now. To avoid ghosting for OFFSET 4 colors their is several others ways... One give upsta

Bill,

Here's my conversion of the Sam Gross comic you provided, done via SPM.

(I used the clone tool in SPM to add depth to the comic).

Cheers,
Brian
