I've heard these called Wild Onions, Sierra Onions and Broadstemmed Onions (Allium platycaule). Lots of them out right now on Donner Summit.
They seem to like open rocky mountaintops. Their actual color is more of a pinkish purple. They taste pretty good, too. <wlEmoticon-smile[1].png>
