Last Winter I went on a Mexico cruise and fell in love with
Retablos. I first saw one in a shop in Puerto Vallarta. They are made
in Mexico , but the best come from Peru. The maker of this example is
the best known artisan. These remind me of the old Diableries
stereoviews with their morals, life depictions, and skeletons. There is
so much jammed into this little box which measures only 10"x9"x2.5".
The box and its swinging doors are also painted in designs. You could
spend a few minutes exploring all parts of the funeral.
I made the image a little larger so that you could zoom in a bit.
The full resolution (4600pixels) reveals much more detail. I haven't
posted in years so forgive me if my file size is too large/not large
enough and my anaglyph creation skills are zilch. I have a couple
others and am considering shooting a series of
these with the acceptance of a couple merchants.
