Brian,
I've tried to avoid flash, but can't escape the fact it's useful at times. I would have started with my twin rig, each camera of which has an available hot shoe and connector for proper flash or remote-flash control interface - except the stereo base of my twin rigs is really too big for my goal of portraits of people, etc. I'm sold on the concept of remote flash, where possible. For the W1 there's probably better ways to go than using tape :-) And I wish for an
electrical interface, rather than slaving the remote off the W1's flash. I'll probably see if I can find info online - I can't help but think that some clever person has already figured how to do an electrical interface to the W1 flash circuitry. Lacking that, at least a photodiode and circuit with a PC sync output.

Ahhh, something I've been wanting to do but too lazy to take the initiative.
It might have been tricky Greg, but it looks like you were ultimately successful with good results! Ao much better than the W1's straight flash with it's weird sometimes 3D shadows. I understand that some people use a transluscent device over the W1's flash, such as a piece of film, cellophane, or maybe something like wax paper.
Nice work. Do you think you've got it down to a science yet?
Cheers,
Brian

Today I decided to start better educating
myself in flash, which I haven't used much.
Our cocker spaniel, Molly, was handy and became my subject for today's experiment. Here is how she spends a rainy day. In these shots she is on 1.) "her" chair, and 2.) her spot on the couch. You can see she is very spoiled! We at least cover the furniture in an
attempt to protect it.
I used tape to block off all but a very small portion of my W1's flash output, allowing only enough output to trigger an external flash - which was located off to the side and pointed up to bounce much of it's light off the ceiling. In both setups, it was a bit tricky to position the slave flash such that it would simultaneously 1.) sense enough of the W1's "blocked" flash to trigger it, 2.) throw its light in the desired direction, AND 3.) not produce bad flare in the W1's lenses (the W1 seemed very susceptible).
