No, you were right the first time!

I don't know why there's so much trouble with "it's" and "its".

If it means "it is" use "it's". That's the *only* time you need the
apostrophe.

For *every* other meaning, use "its".

So your subject line "On its side" is correct, as was your remark "It's
disorienting."

And looking at the image again, it is!
