Thanks Brian! The main advantage of a hookah is that the smoke bubbles through water before it reaches your mouth and lungs, making it less harsh and cooler (supposedly). A variation of this is the narghile, in which the tobacco is moistened first and ignited by means of a smoldering piece of charcoal while smoking.

What is the design principle for them.  How are they different than say, a regular pipe, or other smoking device?

  1. This was taken at the gourmet market next to Shiraz, a no-frills BYO spot serving traditional Persian fare, in Elmsford, NY. It's one of our regular places, and always good. Among other things, the gourmet market sells hookahs, which appear in this image. Pentax Optio, cha-cha, PSCC.
