Here's what I think might be a worthwhile way to determine how close 3D conversions approach reality.  Select a true stereo image
and choose either the right or left chip.  Using only that chip, make it into a 2D-3D conversion and save it.  Then, using conventional
means create an anaglyph with both original chips.  This will provide a normal stereo image.

Place the conversion stereo next to the dual-image stereo side-by-side, and post the results.  See if the members can distinguish
between the two versions.  Better yet, one person should do the conversion, and another member should make the dual-image stereoview.
Both persons should work independently on the same file, or set. Then the two members should post their results on the same date and time.

If both members are profficient, the results could provide an educational experience for all who participate.

I do very little with regard to full conversions, but would be willing to construct the dual-view stereo anaglyph for this experiment. Will someone who can
do well with conversions join me or some other volunteer for this experiment?

Ron,

Thanks.  It looked like it would be an easy first victim.  Lots of soft features to make the blending easy.

This is my first 2D>3D conversion.  The artist is Dru Blair, an incredible realist painter that I have followed for many years.  I found the original from which I did the conversion on the internet and did all the work using PaintShop Pro, which has some very useable tools for this purpose.  I could go back and fix the obvious problems I had with this beginners piece such as the warped canopy window or the wierd wave at lower right, but I think I'll let it stand.  I sent this to Dru to make sure he had no problem with me sharing this on the web and he was quite happy to see what I had done.  I even sent him a pair of glasses.  He did ask that I put the watermark to his web page on the image before releasing it.  I told him how long it took me to do this conversion and he said was probably longer than what it originally took to paint it.  I learned a lot on this one.  I'm also doing another, more ambitious, painting by a living artist, that I hope to be able to share in the future.

Hope you like it.

Roger
