Last weekend was the first mild set of days for
many months, so my wife and I drove to Woodstock, New York. The
village
is a 1-1/2 hours' drive north and east of my
home. The famous Woodstock Festival of 1969 originally was supposed
to have been staged
here, but the event was blocked. As a result
the giant concert was hastily moved to Bethel, which is a short drive from
my home.
The concert kept the name of the originally
intended site.
The village of Woodstock is a tourist mecca, with
boutiques and restaurants and has developed a subculture that reflects
the
liberal and artistic ideals that the '69 concert
was all about. This first view is a portion of the main street in the
early afternoon,
and several weeks before the primary tourist
season. Within an hour the streets became much more crowded.
