Yes.  I don't know Corel, but in Paint Shop Pro there is an option to optimize save files and to set the amount and type of compression to use.  If you don't do that most programs will compress your jpgs every time you save them.  It won't be a conscious effort on your part.  It will just do it.

If you have an ability to control how Corel saves your jpgs then make sure you turn Chroma Subsampling off.  Then you can try different levels of compression to see what you get.

I suspect it is Chroma Subsampling that is causing your problem.

Ron,

I have noticed ghosting appearing after a saved perfect jpg anaglyph is modified in Corel PhotoPaint and then saved as a jpg (with no additional compression) .

I don't know why this should happen.

I've not heard of stability problems with jpgs so I can't comment on that exact problem.  If what you may have heard is that traditional jpg compression causes problems with anaglyph images, then I've encountered that.  Try saving two pictures in SPM, one with 'no compression ghosting' turned on and one with it turned off and you'll be able to see the difference.

Ron,

Why do you sometimes run auto align more than once?

Your suggestions with SPM sound very reasonable. My only concern is that I got some feedback that the SPM anaglyph shouldn't be saved as a jpg, because it makes the image unstable. But instead the image should be saved as a bitmap, and then opened and saved as a jpg in another graphics program, such as PhotoShop or Corel PhotoPaint. Any feedback about this point would be welcomed.

Thanks for your suggestions. They are welcomed and appreciated.

Bill,

I like the color picture better.  I think that is due to the darker nature of the picture to begin with.

If you are using SPM, then this might help.  It is how I manage file size for pictures that I am going to post for the group.  I will often use higher settings for picture I am keeping on my hard drive for myself.  I won't cover how I manage the color, contrast, etc here, (I do a lot of that in PSP anyway) just the steps that affect file size.  I use Auto Align (sometimes more than once) and then make any manual alignments I want to make.  Next I set the stereo window where I want it.  I mention this because both of these actions affect the picture size to a small degree.  Then I crop the picture to look exactly like I want it to look. Depending on how much I crop, this can have a large or small impact on the file size.

Next I use the re-size function and set the picture to 1280 pixels wide or 1024 pixels tall depending on how the picture is shaped.   Since my monitor is set at 1280 by 1024, that makes the picture just the right size to fill the monitor from top to bottom or from side to side.  So in other words, if it is a landscape shaped picture I set it at 1280 wide, if it's a portrait shaped picture I set it at 1024 tall and in either case I let SPM calculate the other side to keep the same aspect ratio.

Finally as I save the picture (make sure 'No Compression Ghosting' is selected!) I look at the file size it will create at 90% image quality.  I keep that setting if the file size is less than 400K (which it usually isn't).  If the file size is over 400K, then I check the 'target size' box and set it at 400K.  SPM will then pick an image quality that creates a file that is at or slightly less than 400K.

This process works great for me.  I hope this helps!

Hi Marshall,

Thanks for the insights and advise.

What would you consider the best file size for sharing with our group. I had gotten complaints that my files were too large, which trhey were in some instances, due to careless errors in sending out the wrong file.

Technically this is well-done, and the composition is excellent.  You should always
keep in mind that since these scenes are intended for viewing with anaglyph glasses
which can make things appear as much as two f-stops darker.  It's best to regulate your
picture-taking for optimum conditions, but if this can't be done, be ready to perform fixes
with the image editor. This view is darker than what I prefer and can be brightened in a good
photo editor, like Photoshop.

Also, before adding special effects like vignetting, master the anaglyph technique first.
Finally I would like to see the views presented a bit larger.

I thought you might enjoy seeing the colored version of this one.

I'd be happy to get feedback about which you like better and why, the black and white or the colored version.
