What you are referring to are the ghost or monocular edges. At the left and right edges, objects are often present or partially present in one view but not the other. They are called monocular (seen by one eye) objects. We resolve this when taking a picture by trying to keep such distracting items to a minimum.

Once the pictures are made, we can remove these objects by cropping, as you suggest, or we can "paint" them out in photoshop. Since they are monocular, there is no information in the other chip to confilict with whatever is used to obscure the distracting object. A full explanation and techniques are covered in chapter 5 of my Digital Stereo Tutorial.

Thank you for the clear explanation. I have another question (somewhat related) that I have asked before but never got an answer. In your first example of incorrect stereo window position, you not only have a w/v, but another problem that makes for uncomfortable viewing even if the shovel is not touching the window. In this and many cases a portion of an object near the side of the frame may show (or partially show) in one chip but not the other. Therefore when you put them together, you see the object (or part of it) in only one of the color levels. That also makes for uncomfortable viewing. What is this called? Cropping so that all parts of all objects are present in each chip might be a solution, but that may be difficult where there are many items in a "busy" picture. I see this often and wonder why it is not mentioned more. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks
