Up till 1848 Denmark covered a much larger area than today -
in northern Germany all the way to Hamburg.
These areas in the southern Jutland started an uprise and
liberated themselves, with heavy aids from Prusia.
In 1920 Germany was forced to sign a peacetreaty in
Versailles which enabled the population in certain
border zones of Germany to decide which nationality
they wanted for themselves through free elections.
Even though Denmark was not involved in the first worldwar
in southern Jutland this led to an expansion of
the Danish territory against a majority of Germans,
due to some irregularities which I shan't go further into.
This statue was raised as a symbol of Mother Denmark
greeting her returning offspring.
Stay cool.
