The bridge takes its name from Lucius Cestio, governor of Rome, who built it in 26 BC to link Tiber Island with the right bank of the Tiber.
In the portico of the church of San Bartolomeo, which opens onto the square on the island, there is a stone commemorating the last great flood of 1937, which submerged the whole island under about two metres of water.
