I doubt it's the rich text that's adding the extra. Sending images by
email involves encoding their data content into printable characters
only, and this introduces considerable overhead. See under MIME on this
page, which quotes the overhead as about 37%:

So Marshall sent a 393KB file and we received it that way, but the
conversion to email format increased it temporarily to 537KB. Nothing
anyone can do about that.
