According to the book, "Larchmont" by Judith Doolin Spikes, this structure was built for its "capacious towers from which unobstructed views of Long Island Sound may be obtained." It was built in the spring of 1893 for George Chatterton, the manager of the Dakota Apartments in New York City (where John Lennon and many other celebrities have lived). It sometimes accommodated overflow guests from the nearby estates of the Barrymores, D. W. Griffith, and vaudeville magnates such as Edward Albee (Sr.). Catering largely to New York City families and known for its "wholesome, family atmosphere," it was evetually winterized and renamed the Manor Inn. In 1954 it was bought by a nursing home operator and was run as a residential hotel for senior citizens until 2002. It was recently bought and divided into two separate structures, one of which was demolished. Sony CyberShot, cha-cha, PS.
