I agree perfectly that in this condition the cardboarding is normal with telephoto lens.
Imagine this situation: the photographer is before a wall ( close infinity). You must use a big base.
100 mm focal duoble base ( 13 cm) 200 mm focal 4x base ( 26 cm).
In this condition the telephoto lens will be a good instrument for stereo.
This is the PePax principle ( Perspective/
Parallax).

I well know that to find this situation isnt easy in the everyday photogaphy, but perhaps in some times we can find it.

While walking in Riverfront Park near downtown Louisville, KY, I spotted this young photographer engrossed in shooting his subject. The background in this long telephoto shot shows the section of the Pennsylvania R.R. Bridge (completed in 1870) that raises to allow boats to enter the Portland Canal.
'Cardboarding' is inevitable in telephoto shots such as this one.
