Further upstream is where it was proposed to site the new bridge 10 years ago. The locals said that if the bridge couldn't be saved then the new one should go where it was originally proposed.
BUT that would mean compulsorily acquiring property belonging to very influential ( read wealthy) persons.

Case dismissed.
