Nature can be a bitch! Last August, while
watching from my upstairs office I
saw the normally sanguine Callicoon Creek rapidly
rise during a huge
downpour.
What I didn't know was that electricity had been cut
off, which is what caused
flooding in my basement in 2006, when the sump pump
had no power. This
time, however my newly-installed generator kept
everything working in my
house, including the sump pump, and a flood was
avoided.
After the rain stopped I surveyed for property
damage, and as it can be seen,
Nature had gone on a rampage, downing trees
into the creek, that could
have caused the waters to back up onto my property.
We later had two tall, standing trees cut down because
they were ripe for crashing
onto the roof and into my office. But the trees
shown at the left end of this view
are still there today, much too big to be removed by
normal means. A representative
from the county said they "may" try to clear out the
trees come the springtime, since
if they break loose, can be carried downstream and
crash into a county bridge just
beyond the extreme left. In other words, the
county is concerned about the bridge,
but not our home and the two of us who live
there!
