I tried to explain exactlly what you say, " because windows don't normally float in space, just like a WV, borders don't normally slice into the picture." clearly and in italian that is more familiar to Imre, but he is firmly convinced that my opinion dosn't matter and can be considered  only a very personal thought . I still think that a Flowting Window is an abnormal element which disturb the 3D image's vision because it's an artificial window on the real one. Yes, it's my opinion of course...
cheers,
Dariush

Imre,
Floating windows are used to correct a problem, which is ghosting.  Isn't there an easier way to correct parallax ghosting by just stepping back a few feet when taking a picture? I think some members may have an issue with FW because windows don't normally float in space, just like a WV, borders don't normally slice into the picture.

Tim

Hi dear friends!
I think that the floating window has the own special reason for use.
I think that it isnt a question of taste, like or not,  it has optical reason.
I prepared some slides for demonstrate: why the floating window is the best choice...

Dia1:

Both retinas has identical points and parts.
The identical points are: 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4.....and so on.
The identical PARTS are the HALF RETINAS....
I think it isnt new, you understand this slide well.

Dia2:

This slide shows the foveal vision. 3 important points: near point, far point and fixation point...
On the slide well visible all three points.

Dia3:

Regarding the identical point of the retina ( Dia1 ), I present what are the identical foveal points.
The LEFT EYE's NEAR point is identical to the RIGHT EYE's FAR point.
The LEFT EYE's FAR point is identical to the RIGHT EYE's NEAR point.

Why this is important to understand? Both retinal images will be overlapped on the CYCLOPEAN EYE what is equal to the BRAIN where the 3D images will be reproduced.

Dia4:

The cyclopean eye is presented. The left and right retinal images are overlapped on the cyclopean retina.
Well visible: the opposite far and near points are overlapped.

Dia5:

Here is an anaglyph, aligned with floating window. The far point and near point separation is equal in SIZE, but reversed. ( Far points positive parallax, near points negativ parallax.)
Only with this alignment ( floating window ) will be the foveal angle IDENTICAL on ALL EYES: Left, right and cyclopean eyes.
The foveal ALFA on all three eyes is equal.
Result: no problem for the fusion, no haedache.
Again: ALFA is equal on ALL THREE EYES!

Dia6:

Here we can see the usual alignment, everything is aligned on the near point, no floating window is used.
Easy to see and understand that the ALFA for left and right eyes REST equal, dont change.
We can judge: no problem, ALFA is the same  for left-right eyes, like with floating window, so we dont need the floating window!!!
WRONG!
FOR THE CYCLOPEAN EYE ( BRAIN ) ALFA in this case is BIGGER than for each eye!!!!!! For cyclopean eye ALFA will be BIGGER.
THIS ENLARGEMENT of the CYCLOPEAN ALFA causes the difficult fusion and the headache.

All this I wrote for understand the REAL function of the floating window.
Hope my slides and text are well comprehensible. ..

OF COURSE THE EXACT SIZE OF ALFA is another issue....:-) )))

Best regards: Imre
