Thank you, Guglielmo. It was the newspaper illustration in the first place that was of an inferior quality, not the jpg-scan. That was why I turned it into a somewhat creamy colour piece, removing or smoothing the artifacts of the printer's plate. The colour image is not unlike the manually coloured photos of the 1920s. For the conversion the mouth was copied from a Half Colour anaglyph and pasted into the Full Colour version. Ciao. JV.
