I joined my cameras together (as in the image) with a headless bolt found at Ace hardware store. I presume it can be found at other hardware supply stores or found and ordered through the internet.
I have also been successful in configuring the DSLRs overlaping each other as in the example Dariush supplied showing his P&S digital cameras. I found that SPM could adjust for the slight difference of one camera in front of the other.

i need small stereobase for portraits closep ups 4 cm and normal 6 cm. my camera is a canon 50D with 77mm lens. even if i got rid of the cameras and the lens hoods
the SB will be around 8 cm. these distances are when the lens is at 35 mm(effective 56 mm )
i believe i can simulate 5.5 cm SB by decreasing the focal length to 24 mm(effective 38.4 mm).i think i loose part of the resolution because the subects occupies a much less area.and I'm restricted to the portrait format.
plus i have to buy lanc shepard to sync. the 2 cameras.for photographing moving objects.
few weeks ago i asked my favorite camera accessories shop if it has a screw to join 2 cameras together his answer was negative. does berezin or any other supplier has
that 1/4 inch screw
