The Wall that Heals is an exhibit traveling around the
USA. It's a 1/2 scale replica of the Vietnam War Memorial Wall in
Washington, DC. The
original wall which consists of many polished stone
slabs containing the names of all the U.S. servicemen who died during that long
conflict. It's a
source of great emotions as friends and families of the
dead visiting the Wall, go searching for the inscribed names of lost
love ones among
the more than 50,000 listings.
Although over 30 years have passed since the war ended,
there is still great division in the nation as to whether or not the war was a
just
one, and ultimately whether those who died were killed
in vain. The traveling Wall that Heals was created to unite the various
sentiments
and bring a sense of peace and resolve to all
Americans.
In May, the Wall was set up at the site of the famous
1969 Woodstock Music Festival, which at the time was known for its widely
anti-war
themes and sentiments. To some exhibiting the Wall
at the site of the most famous anti-war concert was the extreme
irony.
I visited the site to make discrete stereos just to
capture the moment for posterity. This first view of the series shows the
van
that contained Viet Nam War artifacts and an attached
tent, where people could look up the inscribed names and locate those of
personal
interest among the many slabs that make up the
monument.
