I had an hour of great fishing from my pier yesterday evening, catching
about 30 White Perch in an hour and tossing half of those back. Using only
an artificial lure, almost every cast brought back a fish or coaxed a
bite. I guess there must have been a high pressure system as there had
been rain that day and maybe the wind was from the West (fishing is best), wind
from the East (fishing is least).
These days I usually "catch and release" but I was being so successful and
the fish which seemed to get bigger and bigger, convinced me in short order that
I had a craving for a fish dinner.
After landing a nice size White Perch, on impulse, I decided to start
keeping the larger ones. I ran up to the house, fish in hand, and
retrieved a bucket to store them in. After I got back down to the pier I
filled the bucket with water from the cove and continued pulling them in.
I kept only the larger ones which don't get that big for White Perch but they
are the best tasting fish in the Chesapeake Bay.
After I cleaned them I had a nice meal of fish and chips! I had half
of them that night and the other half tonight with FFs and BBs (French Fries
& Baked Beans). They were a nice change of pace after eating nothing
but steaks and hamburger, (trying not to waste my thawed freezer food after it
crapped out a month ago). For a while, I had been eating steaks for
breakfast, lunch and dinner.
They delivered my new chest freezer last Wednesday and I'll
start using it again once I make a trip to the market.
I used the fish heads for crab bait and attached the crab pot to the
end of the pier.
