Subject : [Anaglyphs] Hello, new to the group:

I would like to introduce myself as David Merrick, 58, from San Francisco California. My formal education is in psychology, but have not worked in that profession. I live on social security disability, in a hotel room, but with my disability being relatively minor, and enjoying a part time job to suppliment my income I have the time to be able to pursue relatively inexpensive passtimes.

I have been aware of 3D my entire life but was unaware of the term "anaglyph" until about five years ago: [Side joke-having discovered anyglphs on the net I asked a very generous friend of mine, a gentlman ith a great sense of humor, a  theatre manager, if he had any extra anyglyph glasses he might send me.  He had just finished a run of "Spy Kids 3D" and said, of course he would send me some glasses...and he did...ALMOST 100 PAIR!

I have been aware of anaglyphs for five years but had only considered becoming involved in following a 3D ommunity for about three weeks. I am VERY new at this and will warn that I will most likely make just about every mistake a new member makes, including asking questions already asked and answered dozens of times a long time ago, and composing this initial message that might be too long!

But I have to tell you, with the well stated and warmly inviting home page message, and observing the sheer number of monthly contributors, I believe that joining your grou will be one of the most pleasant decisions I will have made in 2010.

I think ti is approprite, if I am going to ask the members questions in my first message, that it be on the subject of what I might be able to contribut to the group.

1. I would like to know if there are restrictions, here, on posting photos off the net, in which it is possible that they that might be copyrighted... as long as I simply attach them to messages for other members' personal information? Believe it or not, I have moderated my own (gay) photo intensive group, for FIVE YEARS but not one members has been able to answer this question about photos taken off the net, and submitted in messages to the group. I am positive that many of these posted photos are not in the public domain, but only one time once in five years, a copyright holder asked that I remove photos, but only out of the group archive. If the group accepts my submitted photos, I must point out that, until I can rig a 3D camera setup, my photos will be off the net or screen capped from tv, DVDs or VHS videos.

2. Back in the '80's Woody Allen (who had just filmed the movie "Manhattan" intentionally in black and white} spearheaded a movement I have to admit I agree with, to ban the artificial computer "colorization of black and white movies. Those who are photographers here will know that black and white photography/film is not simply a default medium for lack of funds for color film! It's a separate ART unto itsself. And just like Woody Allen's "Manhattan" a number of films might have been filmed in color (Casablanca somes to mind) were filmed in black and white intentionally. Many people agree the films should stay in black and white. QUESTION: Are any group members aware of any similar problem with 3D images SIMULATED FROM 3D SOURCES? "Simulated 3D?"

In the absence of funds for direct two camera 3D photography in the "impressively long 3 weeks I have attended to the creating anaglyphs of my own[!?]" I am biding my time by concentrating on downloading temporary (watermarked) 2d to 3d conversion programs from the net...and experimenting with converting 2d photos and adjacent frames of 2d videos to 3d anaglphys.

Please pardon this long introductory message, but I woud like to end with a sum of my two questions. Can I be free to submit images from the net and from DVD or VHS screen caps here as I do in my own group? And if so, is there any issue in the group concerned withthe anaglyph culture about the sub-culture of simulated 3d anaglyphs?

Last, can I stop captializing the "d" in 3D?.[LOL].. I don't touch type and the finger assigned to hitting the shift key on my keyboard is in threat of developing a blister.

This looks like a great community and I would encourage, if I post anything of interest, please feel free to respond in the group or privately to my personal e-mail account. I hope I can find a niche for contibuting to the group and re-align my image from that of the guy who posts those long messages to the guy that comes up with an occasionlly interesting anaglyph.

My greetings and best wishes to all.

Dave Merrick
