Thank you for this fascinating information about Carl Pulfrich. I think it was either Bach or Beethoven that continued to compose when he was deaf.  I do have a couple more "Pulfrich 3d to Anaglyph" experiments that I will share if they work and in the absence of even a single lens camera, existing 2d media to 3d is what I have been toying with in the vast whole month since I began exploring online anaglyph technology, software and this group.

As for Pulfrich content, I have found the longest single stretch of "found 3d" is, of all the unsual sources, specifically video of THE BACK STRETCH of a horse race!

+ + + +

Because you [all so far] seem so nice, as well as informed, I thought I might end this note with a curious anecdote to do with photography...just photography in general. I t's just a "human interest" story.

Even though I studied psychology in colege, I am shy. One of the people that was really supportive of my going out and meeting people at a rather late age was my boss at a large law firm in San Francisco, Annie. (She warned I use too much cologne). On an important occasion she not only allowed me to come to work late, but pulled me into her office to hear my evaluation of the evening. She was one of the warmest and generous people I had met up to that point. In 1988 she left the law firm to go into professional photography. After a wine and cheese party at one of her public exhibits, I would not hear from her for the next 12 years.

In 2000 to 2001 or so, I picked up The San Francisco Chronicle to find that Annie had won THE PULITZER PRIZE FOR JOURNLISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY that year!

Imagine that.

So, in our somtimes troubled world, sometimes really good things to happen to good people.

The exquisite museum quality work I have experienced in this group so far takes me to interesting, frightening, fascinating and warm and fuzzy worlds. You all seem to be good, creative and interesting people! I hope to learn enough about anaglyph photography, eventually,  to return the favor to the group!

Until then, attached are three more screen caps from that VHS Pulfrich video that I did not send in my other post. reminder...my fascination with these photos is that the video from which they are derived was filmed with a single lens camera from a helicopter.

Hi David,

Yes, the group is familiar with the Pulfrich effect.  Duke has even produced a stereo video using the technique.  Occasionally, I try and look at basketball or football games using the technique.  What's really "ironic" to me however is this...

Astronomer Carl Pulfrich, the namesake for the optical illusion created by 3-D glasses featuring a dark lens and a clear lens, was blind in one eye and never got to see the effect named after him. However, the German optical scholar knew the illusion would exist under the right circumstances.

Cheers,
Brian

Subject: [Anaglyphs] The Pulfrich Effect

For my first posting to the group (i don't even own a single lense camera, yet) I thought I would share something I stumbled up.

The subjects of these 2d to 3d simulations are derived from screen captures from a 20-year-old 1990 VHS video tape of a music video, by country music singers called "The Judds." That is why the subjects of the photo are so grainy and "muddy."

The last music video on that VHS videotape was filmed using "The Pulfrich Effect." Has "The Pulfrich Effect"  been discussed in the the group already? Here is the Wikipedia description:

I suspect that those with a sense of humor can accept the crude fidelity of these 1990 VHS screen captures images for the novelty of their subject:

The first two images are screen capped from the Pulfrich 3D music video sequence, The last four anaglyph images are from a documentary, also on that VHS tape, depicting how that Pulfrich 3D music video was filmed.

I hope you enjoy the irony I stumbled upon: anaglyphs of the filming of a Pulfrich 3D video.

Dave/San Francisco
