A DSLR such as your Canon D50 may not require any external sync device. I have a pair of Nikon D200's which sync perfectly by just a $30 cable made by Nikon. I think you may find that the same is true of the high end Canon cameras as well. Look through the optional items list for your camera or contact Canon and ask. BTW, when taking portraits you should work at the 105 end of your 24-105 lens to avoid facial distortions.
