This is a section of an N scale train layout I built 35 years ago. N scale is 1:160, roughly half of HO scale (1:87). The layout, before I carved it into pieces for storage, was 2 feet by 8 feet . . . equivalent to a 4 feet by 16 feet HO layout. All the structures, including the hoist were scratch built. The D&RGW (Denver & Rio Grande Western) railcars, caboose and engines were not available commercially, so I custom detailed blank cars from photos taken of actual railcars. All cars were ?weathered? to make them appear more natural. The hoist house and the hoist (head frame) were copied from actual mine structures I photographed near Cripple Creek, Colorado. The
gray work train cars were kits which I built and detailed in the D&RGW
style. Nikon D200, slide-bar, PS CS3 Mike Beech |
