This well known phenomena has been debated forever. However, photo tests show that the moon is not magnified. Optical experts attest that it is a mental illusion due to the moon's proximity to objects on the horizon or nearby.

Whatever. . .  It sure looks larger to me. :-)

?

Thanks for commenting Tim.  The next night (Friday), for some reason, the moon looked as large as I'd ever seen it when it was low to the horizon.  Later when it was higher in the night sky it appeared more normal (smaller) size.  I assume the thicker atmosphere acts like a magnifying glass when viewed towards the horizon.

Lunar Eclipse 12-21-10

This was the first time a lunar eclipse has fallen on the winter solstice (longest night of the year) since 1638.

I didn't expect too much clarity with my measly 300 X Zoom but what came out I thought wasn't so bad.

I did a clone conversion via SPM to give the moon some depth although I used two different shots of the moon for the stereo image.  One shot would have been just as good if not better for the conversion.

Unexpectedly, I also witnessed a falling star (meteor) just under and to the left of the moon.  I hadn't seen this event in quite a long while.  It was very quick and for a second I questioned what I had just seen.  Of course I did not have time to capture it even with the wireless remote in my hand.

Pentax K10D DSLR with 300 X Zoom lens, cheap-ass tripod, wireless remote, SPM, IrfanView.

Cheers,
Brian
