For about four years the tiny village of Barryville has
been conducting its own street fair, the Pumpkin Festival.
Barryville is situated on the Delaware River in the
southeast corner of Sullivan County, New York.
Judging from the lovely appearance of the hamlet, with
its row of antiques shops and restaurants the hamlet
probably owes its existence to tourists who visit and
avail themselves of the amenities of river sports, such as
rafting, fishing, and riverside camping. Thus,
although Barryville is surrounded by more conservative lifestyles
from farmers and hunters, the village has a more
cosmopolitan aura.
The Festival runs a single day mostly toward the
beginning of October, while there is just a touch of a morning chill
that
hints at the approaching winter. It's
the last such event in Sullivan County until tourists disappear and
the year-round
population goes into semi-hibernation.
