"Ball Game Courtyard with Temple in the Background"
The Mayan religion demanded that human sacrifices be made to maintain the favor of the gods in regulating the cycles of nature. The winner of the ceremonial ball game was the one to be sacrificed.
Sacrifices might occur on the ground near the ball court or at the top of one of the temples. Cutting out the beating heart of the victim and then offering it to a god was common practice with both the Maya and the Aztecs.
