Thank you for taking the time to comment, JM. Your description of using layers to separate the image elements into layers is exactly the approach that I used for this image in photoshop. In my mind, it was the most logical approach. I ended up with 21 layers, and treated each layer differently, depending upon what was needed. Reassembling the image was fun. I made my biggest errors in "tweaking" the elements after the image was reassembled. There were just too many details for a beginner, and I lost patience with myself and with the project. I think that I will use a less complex image next time.
I really like the conversion that you made of you and your parents. The sidewalk that is receding in depth  toward the Eiffel Tower is perfectly done. I am sure that you cherish this image.
I have tried the depth map approach to 3D conversion, but I do not like the results. It is not possible to obtain complete depth accuracy. Sometimes, an image will need to be redone several times before acceptable results can be obtained. This "trial and error" approach is just not the way I like to do things. I think that the "layered" photoshop method is much more accurate, at least for the initial layout.
Thanks again for commenting, JM. I am looking forward to starting my next conversion, but will wait a few days in order to regain my patience and frame of mind.

You are on the good way, your conversion is not perfect but like pro making conversion I can tell you it is much better some sold by "3D pro" competitors I have in France.
Personally I use a Photoshop plug-in made by my partner 3D movie video maker (we do also short 3Ds movie conversion, camera shoot and computer 3D) and this plug-in (pro secret) permit to separate first all part of the image into several layers ( 5 to 12 or more if necessary), than to apply on each a depth map, than to mixing all depth map with adjustment.
This need three days to five days of intensive attention. We can do also two perspectives frames, three or 24 for a lenticular.

I discover gradually Stereomasken on my ACER laptop with polarized screen during I stay too with my mother when she was to hospital (she was 94 years old).
Last days we past with our mother is important.

Three perspectives frames conversion.  My parents and me 4 years old (not a LRL but a 1-2-3 stereo base).

Bellow the difference of depth between 1-2 and 1-3 stereo base conversion.

For your mother
Text say : a man can bring 12 roses to his wife to tell her is love
a son (or son of son to his Gran Ma) can bring a simple dandelion to his mother in order to do the same.

It has been a while since I last checked in here. My mother was just discharged from the hospital again with another bout of pneumonia, and she is back at the nursing home. This time, she had a collapsed left lung, and they were not able to bring the lung back to normal. She is now on oxygen 24/7, and she is still coughing badly at times. I have placed her under hospice care. I really do not know where we will go from here. ...Day at a time.
While sitting in the hospital for endless hours, I decided to try to teach myself how to do 2D to 3D conversions on my 11 inch netbook. "Try" is the key word here. I have attempted this several times before, and I was never very good at it. I have always admired the conversion work done by Brian, Larry, Duke, Mike and others. I could never seem to match their level of achievement. Attached in my latest attempt. It is of an aeronautical painting that I found online. I know that there are some problems with this image, so be kind. I'm still trying to learn. I just got tired of working on it and decided to call it quits for this one and go on to another image.
Thanks for looking, guys.
